According to Policybazaar data, the share of unlimited SI plans increased to 15.19 per cent in Q1FY27 from 7.27 per cent in FY26 and just 0.05 per cent in FY25.

Unlimited Sum Assured is a health insurance plan that covers eligible hospitalization expenses without any fixed coverage limit, unlike traditional policies that offer a predetermined sum insured such as ₹5 lakh or ₹10 lakh. Coverage is still subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.

Siddharth Singhal, Business Head, Health Insurance, Policybazaar, said, “The rapid increase in adoption of unlimited sum insured reflects a clear shift in consumer mindset. Indians are increasingly recognizing that traditional health covers may not be enough to keep pace with medical inflation and rising costs of treatment.”

Demand is being driven mainly by young consumers. Millennials accounted for about 57 per cent of purchases of unlimited SI plans in FY27, while Gen Z contributed more than 30 per cent, which shows that young buyers are looking at health insurance as a long-term financial planning tool rather than just a tax-saving product.

Women’s participation also increased, with their share increasing to 16.3 per cent in FY2027 from 12.4 per cent in FY2025, although men’s share in purchasing remained at more than 83 per cent.

This trend is no longer limited to metros. The share of tier-III cities in unlimited SI procurement stood at 41.7 per cent in FY27, up from 31.7 per cent in FY25, while the share of tier-II cities increased from 17 per cent to 25 per cent. In contrast, the contribution of Tier-I cities declined from 51.3 per cent to 33.3 per cent, indicating that the demand for comprehensive health insurance is spreading beyond the country’s largest urban centres.

Among individual cities, Surat recorded a 45 per cent increase in average ticket size, followed by Hyderabad (43 per cent) and Mangaluru (41 per cent). NCR, Bengaluru and Pune also saw an increase in premium ticket sizes.

The product is also being preferred among first-time buyers, customers porting existing health insurance policies and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). The share of NRIs opting for unlimited SI plans increased from 20 per cent in FY26 to 36 per cent in FY27. Individual policyholders recorded the adoption rate of unlimited SI plans at 18 per cent, while it was around 13 per cent among family floater policyholders.
