NALCO’s Alumina exports to India
According to Brijendra Pratap Singh, CMD of state-owned National Aluminum Company Limited, its exports to West Asia have been affected due to geopolitical tensions in the region.
West Asia accounts for 40-50 percent of the company’s alumina shipments.
National Aluminum Company (NALCO) also said a change in export destinations due to supply disruption in West Asia has contributed to the fall in global spot aluminum prices, which have now fallen to $305-310 a tonne.
Alumina is a white, granular material refined from bauxite ore, which is primarily used as a feedstock for the production of aluminum.
“Our alumina exports are to the Middle East… About 40 per cent, 50 per cent of our exports were going to the Middle East, which has been affected. But now, orders are also coming from Indonesia and other places. Of course, this has resulted in a decline in spot prices,” Nalco Chairman and Managing Director said in an earnings conference call. NALCO further said that smelters in West Asia are currently operating at reduced capacity and will not reach full capacity immediately.
“So once these smelters in the Middle East reach full capacity, production will be cut, which will impact the price of alumina in the spot markets,” the company said.
Analysts said the aluminum value chain has been hit by the West Asia conflict, as spot prices of alumina have fallen in some regions due to oversupply, while refined aluminum prices have risen due to production shutdowns and shipping disruptions.
NALCO produced 23 lakh tonnes of alumina in 2025-26, of which 13.08 lakh tonnes was exported.
NALCO reported a 16.6 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 1,722.44 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, due to lower revenues and higher expenses. The company had posted a consolidated profit of Rs 2,067.23 crore in the same period a year ago.
Revenue declined to Rs 5,012.82 crore in Q4FY26, compared to Rs 5,267.83 crore in the year-ago period.
National Aluminum Company Limited is one of India’s leading integrated aluminum complexes, operating in bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminum smelting, power generation and coal mining.
