Alstom gets €107 million worth of loco maintenance

French rolling stock maker Alstom was on Friday awarded a five-year maintenance services contract for 250 locomotives of the Indian Railways, worth €107 million. The engines will be maintained at the company’s Nagpur depot.

This is a renewal of the previous four-year agreement between the national transporter and Madhepura Electric Locomotive Pvt Ltd (MELPL), the French company’s joint venture with Indian Railways.

The 12,000 hp Prima T8 WAG-12B locomotives are fundamental to India’s green mobility goals, capable of hauling 6,000 tonnes at a speed of 120 kmph.

They serve as the workhorse of dedicated freight corridors, significantly increasing freight capacity while reducing carbon emissions. Under the agreement, the scope of MELPL includes complete maintenance of 250 locomotives and depot infrastructure.

“To ensure rapid problem resolution and maximize fleet availability, Alstom will continue to deploy its specialized Prompt Response Teams (PRTs) equipped with tools and spares at strategic locations across the country,” the company said.
