Following is the chronology of additional or reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US on Indian goods in addition to the existing duties from April 2025.

  • Before April 2, 2025: MFN (Most Favored Nation) tariffs only. These are standard import duties imposed on goods from all trading partners on a non-discriminatory basis.

  • April 2 – August 6, 2025: 26 percent (10 percent baseline tariff and 16 percent reciprocal tariff). This was in addition to the MFN duties.

  • April 9, 2025: US suspended tariffs for 90 days (until July 9, 2025).

  • July 31, 2025: The US announced a 25 percent duty effective August 7, 2025.

  • August 6, 2025: An additional 25 percent tariff was imposed on Indian goods for the purchase of Russian oil. Will be effective from 27th August.

  • 7th August- August 26, 2025: 25% reciprocity fee in addition to MFN fee.

  • August 27, 2025 – February 6, 2026: 50 percent tariff on Indian goods

  • February 7 – February 23, 2026: 25 percent tariffs related to Russia were withdrawn. A joint India-US statement indicated Washington’s intention to reduce tariffs from 25 percent to 18 percent. But the cuts were not implemented.

  • February 20, 2026: US Supreme Court strikes down reciprocal charges

  • February 24, 2026, Next: US announces 10 percent tariffs for 150 days. No clarity after this.

  • 7 May 2026: A US federal court struck down a 10 percent tariff. But the decision directly applied to only three plaintiffs, the state of Washington and two businesses, spice company Burlap & Barrel and toy company Basic Fun. The US administration is expected to appeal Thursday’s decision.

However, there is no change in the regional tariff imposed under Section 232. It is 50 percent on steel, aluminum and copper; 25 percent on certain auto components, and 100 percent on patent pharma for all US trading partners.
