Trump calls NATO "cowardly"

President Donald Trump attacked NATO allies on Friday over their lack of support in the US-Israel war against Iran, calling the longtime US allies “cowards.”

“Without the United States, NATO is a paper tiger!” Trump said in a social media post.

Trump is calling on key US allies and others, none of whom were consulted or consulted on the war, to help secure the safety of shipping through the Iran-controlled Strait of Hormuz. The conflict has roiled global markets, left thousands dead and displaced millions since the US-Israeli offensive began on February 28.

The US President complained that NATO countries do not want to get involved in the fight against Iran, yet complains about high oil prices.

“Now that battle has been won militarily, there is very little risk to them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but do not want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military move that is the sole cause of high oil prices. It is much easier for them to do that, with so little risk,” he wrote. “Cowards, and we will remember!”

Germany, Britain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and Canada pledged in a joint statement Thursday to engage in “appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the strait.” But German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made it clear that this would end the war.

French President Emmanuel Macron said after the EU summit in Brussels that defending international law and promoting de-escalation was “the best we can do”, adding: “I have not heard anyone here expressing a desire to get involved in this conflict – quite the contrary.”
