DC vs MI preview: Rahul, Rohit

Delhi Capitals (DC) will take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in the first game of Saturday’s IPL double-header at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Both the teams are entering the match after winning their opening matches of IPL 2026. With Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul in the mix, this contest promises to be a mix of high-quality batting and interesting match-ups at various stages.

Mumbai Indians are heading into the contest with clarity in their approach, with head coach Mahela Jayawardene emphasizing process and adaptability rather than external noise.

“It should be a good match. Delhi Capitals is a very good team and every team in the IPL is a challenge on their home ground,” Jayawardene said. “We will continue to focus on our strengths… We won’t think too much about the opposition, but we will respect them and aim to play our best cricket.”

Powerplay battle: Rahul vs MI’s pace battery

The early exchanges can define the direction of the match, especially as KL Rahul will face Mumbai’s pace attack.

Rahul’s record against Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult shows a competitive but testing match-up. He has scored 146 runs against Bumrah at a strike rate of 124 in 14 innings, while Boult has dismissed him thrice in 12 innings.

Mumbai will look to attack early through their experienced new ball pair, while Delhi will depend on Rahul to carry the innings forward and blunt the initial burst.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma’s clash with Akshar Patel could be decisive. The left-arm spinner has dismissed Rohit thrice for just 63 runs in 10 innings in the IPL. If conditions allow, Delhi may be tempted to use Axar with the new ball.

Rohit’s return has brought stability to MI

Much of Mumbai’s batting confidence hinges on Rohit’s form and fitness, with Jayawardene highlighting the opener’s preparation for the season.

“Credit to Rohit – he had a clear plan regarding his fitness,” he said. “When I saw him in the nets, he looked to be in very good form – his hand movement was excellent.”

The MI coach said Rohit’s experience and preparation has made a positive impact within the squad, with the opener looking “focused and relaxed” after his off-season work.

If Rohit provides a solid start, Mumbai’s middle order led by Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma has the potential to accelerate quickly.

Middle overs: spin vs strokeplay

There could be a battle in the middle overs between Delhi’s spin attack and Mumbai’s aggressive middle-order.

Both Suryakumar and Tilak have had success against Kuldeep Yadav in previous IPL meetings. Suryakumar has scored against left-arm wrist spinners at a strike rate of 145, while Tilak has not been dismissed in six innings.

Delhi will depend on Kuldeep to break partnerships, but Mumbai’s batsmen have shown the ability to counter him effectively.

For Delhi, David Miller can play an important role in the middle stage, although he will face a tough test against Hardik Pandya. The MI all-rounder has dismissed Miller eight times in T20 cricket, making this a match that could impact the pace of the game.

Conditions and balance: what to expect

With high scores becoming a trend in T20 cricket, conditions will again be under scrutiny. Jayawardene believes it is too early to draw conclusions from the opening matches of the season.

“Today in T20 cricket, a par score is around 180… on better surfaces it can go up to 200,” he said. “As the tournament progresses into the summer, the pitches get slower, and that brings the bowlers into the game more.”

He said that despite the batting-friendly conditions, the bowlers have been consistently performing well and remain a key factor in determining the outcome.

MI’s depth and continuity approach

Mumbai have largely favored consistency in their combinations, with Jayawardene underscoring the franchise’s preference for stability.

“Continuity is very important for us as a franchise,” he said. “We fully support our players and the team understands that structure.”

This approach extends to team building and preparation, with MI relying on a mix of experienced international players and emerging talent to adapt to varying conditions throughout the tournament.

mentality and stakes

With 10 teams in the competition, consistency remains the biggest challenge. Jayawardene stressed the importance of focusing on one game at a time rather than focusing on past results.

“There is no need to put extra pressure on ourselves… we just have to continue what has been working for us,” he said. “If we keep pushing ourselves… the results will follow.”
