FIFA WC 2026 RO32: Netherlands

The Netherlands take on Morocco at the Estadio Monterrey on Tuesday in one of the standout fixtures of the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with a place in the last 16 up for grabs against either Brazil or Japan.

Both sides reached the knockout stage with seven points from three matches after impressive group-stage campaigns. The Dutch topped Group F on goal difference, while Morocco finished second behind Brazil in Group C despite remaining unbeaten.

Ronald Koeman’s side have gone a remarkable 15 matches unbeaten in World Cup games in normal and extra time, while Morocco have gone unbeaten in 32 consecutive international fixtures.

Netherlands rely on attacking firepower

The Netherlands are one of the most dangerous attacking teams of the tournament, having scored 10 goals in three group-stage matches. After giving up a late lead in a 2-2 draw against Japan, Ronald Koeman’s side responded strongly by beating Sweden 5-1 and Tunisia 3-1 to top Group F.

The introduction of Brian Brobbey as a central striker has transformed the Dutch attack, giving midfielders Tijjani Reinders and Ryan Gravenberch more freedom while creating space for wider players.

However, the Oranje have been less reliable defensively, failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their three World Cup matches and extending that streak to seven consecutive games.

Koeman has been given a timely boost with Denzel Dumfries and Brobbey both declared fit, while Micky van de Ven is expected to return at left-back. Led by captain Virgil van Dijk, the Netherlands know that a more disciplined defensive performance will be necessary against Morocco’s pace on the counter.

Morocco out to continue fairytale run

Morocco have reinforced their reputation as one of the most resilient teams in world football by extending their unbeaten streak to 32 matches. The Atlas Lions began their World Cup campaign with an impressive 1–1 draw against Brazil, before wins over Scotland and Haiti secured qualification for the knockout stage, equaling the long-time five-time champions.

Head coach Mohammed Ouahabi also benefited from rotating several key players against Haiti, ensuring a fresh squad for the end of the tournament. Ismail Saibari has emerged as Morocco’s standout performer after scoring in all three group-stage matches, and becoming the first African player to score in each of his country’s opening three World Cup group-stage games.

Midfielder Ayoub Bouadi has also impressed with his composure and control, while Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz continue to provide quality on the flanks. With a fully fit squad available and increased confidence after reaching the semi-finals in Qatar four years ago, Morocco will believe they have every chance of ending the Netherlands’ long unbeaten World Cup run.
