West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal met Governor RN Ravi at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday to complete the statutory formalities of submitting the gazette notification naming the elected members of the new assembly after the recently concluded state elections.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Aggarwal said that apart from completing the pending election process in Falta constituency, the role of the Election Commission in the assembly elections has ended.
“I came to complete the statutory work of submitting the gazette notification, which is done after any election. The list of elected MLAs has been submitted,” the CEO said.
He said, “Now it is the job of Lok Bhavan to constitute the Assembly. Apart from completing the Falta elections, the role of the Election Commission has ended.”
Submission of gazette notification after the declaration of results is a mandatory constitutional norm, paving the way for the Governor to initiate the process of constituting the new assembly and forming the government.
The BJP won a landslide victory with 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, ending Trinamool Congress’s 15-year uninterrupted rule. TMC could get only 80 seats.
Outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not yet submitted her resignation to the Governor after her party’s defeat in the assembly elections.
