At least 64 people, including at least 13 children, were killed in an attack on a hospital in Sudan’s West Darfur region last week, the World Health Organization said on Saturday.
WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus told Ax that an attack on the Al Dein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on Friday also injured at least 89 people and disabled the hospital.
Sudan descended into chaos in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces escalated into a nationwide war.
RSF has blamed the army for the attack on the hospital.
The army has denied the attack, but two military officers said the attack was targeted at a nearby police station. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the matter openly.
More than 40,000 people have been killed in the devastating war, according to UN figures, but aid groups say that is an undercount and the real number could be many times higher.
WHO has said more than 2,000 people have been killed in attacks on medical facilities since the war began.
“Too much blood has been shed. Too much suffering has been caused. It is time to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan,” Ghebreyesus said.
