Secretary of Sharnabasaveshwar Vidya Vardaka Sangha Basavaraj Deshmukh on Tuesday called upon students joining various undergraduate courses at Sharnbasva University this year to treat the opportunity as a launching pad for bright academic and professional careers.

He was speaking after inaugurating the eight-day Deeksharambha (induction) programme for freshers here.

Mr. Deshmukh said that the university has already made its mark in academic circles by providing quality education, adopting emerging ideas and skilling students through hands-on training to make them industry-ready.

Tracing the legacy of the sangha, Mr. Deshmukh recalled its more than 200 years of social and selfless service to Kalaburagi, including the establishment of the first primary school for girls in 1934.

He said that the eighth Mahadasoha Peetadipathi and founding Chancellor of Sharnbasva University Sharnbaswappa Appaji was instrumental in setting up a chain of educational institutions, including an exclusive women’s engineering college and the region’s first private university.

Vice-Chancellor Anilkumar Bidve, in his presidential address, underlined the importance of higher education in shaping careers and contributing to national growth.

Citing global trends, he said that countries such as the U.S. and those in Europe, with Gross Enrolment Ratios (GER) of nearly 80%, have advanced on the strength of their knowledge base, while India’s GER still hovered between 30% and 35%.

Karnataka’s GER is around 29%, while Tamil Nadu leads with more than 50%, he added.

“In the Kalyana Karnataka region, GER is barely 20%. You are the fortunate few who have entered the portals of higher education. Make the best use of this opportunity to secure your future and contribute to the nation’s progress,” he told students.

Prof. Bidve said that Sharnbasva University is among the first to mandate internships, enabling students to gain practical exposure and even earn stipends during their course.

He noted that the university has introduced futuristic programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Science to meet the emerging challenges.

Registrar S.G. Dollegoudar spoke about the facilities available on campus, while Dean Lakshmi Patil Maka welcomed the gathering.

A video tribute showcasing the life and contributions of Dr. Sharnbaswappa Appaji was screened.
