A day after the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board operated one gate of the Himayatsagar reservoir, three more gates were lifted by one foot on Friday to let the flood downstream.
With heavy rains recorded in the upstream areas on Thursday, the two reservoirs – Himayatsagar and Osmansagar began to receive excess water since evening. The Himayatsagar at 11 p.m. on Thursday, for a full tank level of 1,763.50 feet or 2.970 tmcft, was holding 2.734 tmcft water or at 1,762.70 feet. While the inflow was about 1,000 cusecs, with the single gate lifted, 339 cusecs outflow was maintained.
On Friday, the Water Board decided to operate another gate at 8.30 a.m. The reservoir, starting 6 a.m., was brimming, hovering around the FTL. As inflows kept rising, the outflow too was doubled to 695 cusecs with the two gates lifted. Even at 10 a.m., the inflows were at 4,000 cusecs, when three gates were operated by one foot. An hour later, the fourth gate was lifted. As of the status available at 7 p.m., 1,300 cusecs water was being received, and 2,070 cusecs was being let off. The reservoir recorded brimming levels throughout the day.
On the other hand, the Osmansagar reservoir was receiving 400 cusecs. For an FTL of 1,790 feet or a full capacity of 3.90 tmcft, the reservoir was holding 2.554 tmcft water.
Water Board Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy reviewed the situation at the reservoirs and the gates operation with senior officials. He instructed officials for smooth coordination with officials in Hyderabad and Rangareddy administrations, GHMC, HYDRAA, and the police.
