The Koorgalli unit of the Federation of Farmers’ Organisation was inaugurated on Sunday in a bid to give a thrust to local movement against land acquisition.

The unit was inaugurated by Kurubur Shanthakumar, president, State Sugarcane Cultivators Association who rued that politicians who seek farmers votes to get elected, conspire to evict them by acquiring agricultural land.

He said there should be a strong movement against the government policy of acquiring fertile agricultural land for allotment to industries and depriving the farmers of their source of livelihood.

He cautioned against reposing trust in politicians, those wearing green shawls, and said that they were taking the genuine farmers for a ride by misleading them on various issues. Every political party is guilty of it and farmers should see through the deception of political parties, Mr. Shanthakumar added.

There will be a farmers rally in Delhi on August 25, under the aegis of Kisan Samyukta Kisan Morcha and hundreds of farmers from Karnataka will also take part in it.

Mr. Shanthaumar said the rally is purely non-political and is being held to highlight the issues plaguing the agricultural sector and draw government’s attention to the pending demands pertaining to enact a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price for agricultural produce.

Mr. Attahalli Devaraj, organising secretary, called upon the village units to take up the cause of farmers and support them instead of taking up futile and non-serious issues.
