BSP becomes the first party to announce candidates for upcoming Bihar election

Uttar Pradesh-based Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Saturday (September 27, 2025) became the first political party to announce candidates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly election due in October-November.

The party announced candidates for three of the four constituencies of Kaimur district – Bhabua, Mohania and Ramgarh.

In July 2025, BSP supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had announced that the party would go solo on all 243 Assembly seats in Bihar.

Kaimur district BSP president Chote Lal Ram, while addressing a press conference, said, “Today, we are announcing candidates for three Assembly constituencies: Vikas alias Lalu Patel from Bhabua, Om Prakash Diwana from Mohania and Satish Yadav alias Pintu Yadav from Ramgarh. Soon, we will also announce the name of the candidate for the Chainpur assembly seat.”

He further said, “The candidates for these Assembly seats have been announced for the 2025 Assembly elections on the instructions of party national president Mayawati, central in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Gautam, and Bihar in-charge Anil Kumar Patel.”

Lone BSP MLA switched to JD(U) last time

In the last Assembly election, the BSP contested from 78 constituencies and won only one – Chainpur, where Mohammad Jama Khan of the party defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Brij Kishor Bind by a margin of 24,294 votes.

However, Mr. Khan later switched to ruling Janata Dal (United) and became the Minorities Welfare Minister in the Cabinet of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

In a close contest in Ramgarh, the BSP’s Ambika Singh was defeated by Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Sudhakar Singh by a margin of just 189 votes. Mr. Sudhakar is the son of former RJD state president Jagdanand Singh.

Later, Mr. Sudhakar was made the RJD candidate for Buxar in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and won the seat by defeating the BJP’s Mithilesh Tiwari.

As the Ramgarh seat went vacant, a bypoll was held in November 2024 and the RJD fielded Ajit Singh, younger brother of Mr. Sudhakar.

However, Mr. Ajit lost the election and came only third while the BJP’s Ashok Kumar Singh won by a slim margin of 1,362 votes over his BSP rival Satish Yadav, who is going to contest from the constituency again this time.

In 2020, the BSP was the runner-up in two Assembly seats and came third in 14. The party garnered a vote share of 1.5% in that election.
