Retired IFS officer P. Mallikharjun Rao, who is an advisor to Andhra Pradesh government, indicated the State’s resolve to transform Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park (SVZP) into a centre for conservation, education and research.

During his inspection of the park on Monday, he stated that SVZP was not just a recreational space, but a vital centre meant to be developed into a model institution for conservation, animal care, visitor engagement and sustainable practices. “The insights from the inspection and discussions will be invaluable in charting the future roadmap for the development of SVZP,” he said.

Earlier, he planted a peepal tree (Ficus Religiosa) at the zoo premises, symbolising the role of zoological parks not only in ex-situ conservation, but also in promoting biodiversity and enhancing green cover.

During the inspection, he watched the various animal enclosures, including those housing the big cats, elephants, primates and avian species. Posing queries on the well-being of the animals, Mr. Rao assessed their living conditions, healthcare facilities, dietary management and general upkeep.

He told the veterinary staff and animal keepers about the animal welfare standards and the need to raise the bar in maintenance.
