ENG vs IND: Root’s unbeaten 99 runs

Joe Root produced another batting masterclass, scoring an unbeaten 99 as England beat India by four wickets in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens on Thursday to level the three-match series 1-1.

Chasing a modest target of 234 runs, the former England skipper played a composed innings to take over the innings and ensure the hosts crossed the target with 35 balls to spare. Root’s calm presence at the crease proved decisive as England recovered from some early setbacks to complete the chase at 235/6 in 44.1 overs.

Earlier, England’s bowlers set the stage after captain Harry Brook decided to field first. India looked to be in good position at 178/3, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, but lost their remaining seven wickets for just 55 runs before a dramatic collapse.

Kohli continued his return to form with a brilliant 65 off 66 balls, hitting eight fours and looked in complete control during his partnership with Iyer. The latter countered England’s short-ball tactics effectively, scoring 66 runs from 71 balls while keeping India’s innings total above 250.

However, England’s pace attack turned the tide of the contest. Jofra Archer once again troubled the Indian batsmen with his pace and bounce and returned figures of 3/47, while Gus Atkinson matched him with 3/50. Saqib Mahmood also made important breakthroughs as India’s middle and lower order were under constant pressure.

In a strong position, India were all out for just 233 in the 44th over, allowing England to chase the target with ease.

Root ensured there were no problems late on, expertly rotating the strike and punishing loose balls to lead England to victory. The win canceled out India’s six-wicket win in the opening ODI in Birmingham, setting up a winner-take-all series decider at Lord’s on Sunday.

The momentum is now shifting towards the hosts, with both teams heading into the final match knowing that the series is still firmly within reach.
